Made In Bury Business Awards 2017

Square Peg Associates were proud to sponsor a category this year at the awards – Bury Businesswoman of the Year – and I had the pleasure of being one of the judges for the category.

There were 21 categories, including Businessman of The Year and Businesswoman of The Year, two new awards for 2017. Businesses and their teams arrived to enjoy a fantastic night celebrating some of our towns very best.

Now that the MIBBA’s are over for another year, Made in Bury asked me about my experience of being part of the awards and the judging panel. Here’s what I had to say….

“This was the first time that I’ve been involved in the judging at the Made In Bury Business Awards. The whole process was seemless from scoring the applications through to interviewing the finalists on the day of the meet and greet.

The interview day was brilliant, full of positive, engaged and motivated people that were incredibly passionate about
their businesses. The finalists were all of such high quality and very much driven, proving that the talent in Bury is
of a very high standard.

It was incredibly tough to choose the winners, everyone was so deserving in their own right. The awards ended of course with a great “do” on the 23rd November which was brilliant. Absolutely fantastic to be part of.”

Suzanne writes;

“I heard a fantastic quote in the ladies brunch seminar given by Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland recently. She’s an inspirational life coach and the words really struck a cord with me “The only thing that limits you is what goes on between your ears”. This applies to so many of us in many different ways. 

The week after the seminar, I was flying 500ft in the air on a zip wire in Wales!!! 

Follow your dreams, walk towards your fears and focus on what you want to achieve!! 

Suzanne and friends enjoyed riding Europe’s largest zip line in Snowdonia recently. They climbed 500ft above a slate quarry and travelled a mile suspended from a zip wire reaching up to 100 miles per hour.

A truly a nerve wracking yet exhilarating experience which we would highly recommend to all! Absolutely brilliant!!

Prepare & Plan!

As you know James has been in training for Tough Mudder which he undertook this weekend to raise money for the Super Josh charity. To train for any event you need to prepare and plan just like a career change, and as part of the preparation for the event he decided to get some help from an expert.

Do Fitness are based in Bury and cover the Greater Manchester areas. They specialise in home personal training, lifestyle conditioning classes and swim teaching. Do Fitness is built around doers, people who want to make a change in their lives and do fitness.

From initial phone call Paul from Do Fitness was informative and worked with James on the goals he had set for himself. From the first face to first meeting he gave an overview of training plans and insights on how James should approach the task at hand. Paul is based in Bury and as a local business launched recently (congratulations btw) I think seeking advice from a business based in the same town in which Superjosh is based was important.

A brilliant local business helping the Doers of the community get fitter and stronger. And an example of applying good planning techniques into other areas of life!

Pushing the Limits

Tough Mudder training sessions with Fitness Success Bootcamp in Leeds.

I’ve been getting in some extra training for my Tough Mudder event to raise money for The Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity so I made a visit to Fitness Success BootCamp which was founded in 2005, with just a wheelbarrow and a few basketballs full of water. Now with a truckload of the latest equipment fitness success has become Leeds number 1 Bootcamp. 

An ideal place to start if you’re training for an obstacle related event like a Mini Mudder or Tough Mudder.

We were put into groups we started with a warm up session of stretches and movements then straight on to the course.The course wasn’t crowded, everyone stayed as a team and helped each other over and through obstacles at various points.

We tackled, wooden climbing walls, climbing ropes, big boggy pits of muddy water and sludge (where you had to scrawl on your hands and knees to move) it stank!! Monkey bars, cargo nets and inclining wooden walls. I’m sure there were a few more too!

 All in all a great way to push your limits.

The Made in Bury Business Awards are championing local Bury businesses and celebrating their outstanding achievements for the fifth year running.

The Made in Bury Business Awards 2017, taking place on the 23rd November, will reward and recognise local businesses and this year we are proud to be sponsoring a category

Myself and Jemma from the Square Peg Associates team attended the Spring Business Expo North West at Ewood Park on May 4th (Star Wars Day) and found it pretty busy with some good exhibitors, a tad quieter than usual on the visitors front, though this gave us the opportunity to really have a good in depth chat with the exhibitors about their businesses, share local market knowledge and book some great future meetings to carry on those chats!

We had a fantastic night at the BIG Bury Business Expo which we blogged about here, we made some great contacts and recently we’ve been out and about delivering the prizes from our business card draw.

What a night! – Big Bury Business Expo

A huge thank you to Phil, Debbie, Kathryn and Natasha from The Best of Bury for yet another great business expo at The Village Hotel, Bury. Well done to all the prize winners.

 It was Square Peg’s second expo which we enjoyed immensely, in particular, the speed networking which was a quick fire way of connecting and exchanging business cards to around 30 people in a short session. We had some proud moments in the evening, being told from several contacts that we are “The best recruiters in the Bury region for quality and service and they would undoubtedly recommend us to any of their contacts or suppliers”.

I’m so proud of the team and what we have achieved as a business so far, we are coming up for our five year anniversary in May 2017 and comments like these mean so much to us and we feel very welcomed as part of the Bury Business community. After our last blog on Learning to Listen we are working on how we can use this feedback to further improve our services.

Learning to Listen

We recently received a fantastic testimonial from our client Greg French at AFG Law, and I really wanted to post the testimonial here in our blog and say how much it still means to us to get great feedback. Myself and the team here at Square Peg are really passionate about what we do and when we get this sort of feedback it really makes our hearts sing!

We read so much about ways to keep individuals and teams motivated and how we maintain job satisfaction, but nothing makes me more motivated than hearing positive feedback and a client advising they wouldn’t hesitate to recommend us. I’ve worked very hard to try and listen to my clients and customer’s requirements and it’s something we will continue to work on as a team as I know there is always room for improvement!

Towards the end of last year AFG LAW were recruiting for a new assistant cashier and passed a referral to Paul Aisthorpe from the Square Peg team. Greg wrote:

“Square Peg very quickly made contact with us and identified what it was that we were looking for in a candidate. They understood the skill sets required, and perhaps more importantly the type of person that we were looking for. They put forward what looked to be an excellent candidate within 2 days of being given the brief. An interview was set up but unfortunately, the guy gave back word and even before the interview, decided to stay put at his current job.

In between making the appointment and it being cancelled, we decided that the job role that we originally briefed Square Peg had changed. We passed on the amended job description and again within 2 days or so, Square Peg had identified a further candidate. We interviewed Matt, and after having a couple more chats with him, decided that he was the ideal fit to what was a fairly new role for AFG LAW, offered him the job and he accepted. He has now been with us for approximately 3 months.

It would have been very easy to pass this testimonial as soon as the role had been filled – job done! But I felt that it would mean far more now, several months further on and seeing Matt developing so well in the role.

Square Peg are different to other recruitment companies that we have used in the past. They listened to what we needed and understood the sort of person that we were looking for – both from a skill set and a personality. They also understood the ethos of AFG LAW.
